Three years ago, on September 9, 2011, we opened the doors of our True Colors Residence in Central Harlem. The first of its kind in New York City, True Colors Residence provides permanent, safe, and supportive housing to 30 formerly homeless Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) young adults. Currently, 40% of New York City homeless youth identify as LGBT. These youth are more prone to depression and generalized anxiety disorders and have a higher than average suicide rate. Having stable housing offers our residents the opportunity to flourish in a secure environment.
Now our second True Colors project is under construction in the Bronx and will provide this underserved population with another 30 units of permanent supportive housing. As we work toward our goal of having a True Colors Residence in each of the five boroughs we need your help. Today, we ask that you celebrate with us by making a gift in honor of True Colors Residence’s birthday. Please show your support of West End’s work as we continue our efforts to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our residents.
