For over thirty years, West End Residences has provided safe and supportive transitional and permanent housing, as well as comprehensive services, for New York City’s most vulnerable low-income and homeless individuals and families. We began in 1989 with West End Intergenerational Residence, which operates as a homeless shelter for young mothers and their children, and as permanent affordable housing for low-income and formerly homeless older adults.
In 2011, we adapted our trauma-centered support services and individualized care model to create True Colors Supportive Housing. True Colors Residence in Central Harlem is New York’s first permanent, affordable housing with onsite support services designed for homeless LGBTQ young adults. In 2015, we opened True Colors Bronx and plan to develop additional sites.
Across each of our sites, we provide case management and comprehensive support services including basic domestic skills, financial literacy, educational and job readiness assistance, behavioral health care and empowerment, abuse prevention, understanding early childhood development for our young mothers, and healthy aging for our senior residents.
